Cameron Ranch Alvar, Canada’s own Serengeti, to learn about the grassland
and shrubland alvar communities there, and to see specialized alvar plants

Pennyroyal. You can also expect to see or hear a diversity of birds such as
Upland Sandpiper, Horned Lark, Eastern Towhee, Clay-coloured Sparrow, and
Grasshopper Sparrow. With luck we may also observe Loggerhead Shrikes.
Transportation to the interior of the Ranch will be by school bus, with
walking required after that. The tour is limited to 20 including children of

Join staff from Dufferin Aggregates for an
overview of the geology of the Carden Plain and learn about how aggregate
contributes to our strong and growing community. We’ll debunk some myths
about operations and give you a tour of our award-winning quarry. You’ll
have a chance to ask questions and get straight answers. The tour is
conducted by bus right into the pit. Tour limited to 40 including children
who, if under 16, need adult supervision. with a minimum of 10.

BUTTERFLIES AND
DRAGONFLIES FOR BEGINNERS

First there will be an inside
workshop to go through the classification of the different species and keys
using the field guides. Then we’ll walk a trail through the field behind the
Carden Recreation Centre looking for butterflies and across the road by the
edge of the lake for the dragonflies. Participants can apply what they
learned in the workshop. We may walk down the road to a large rock in Lake
Dalrymple where there are several dragonflies and possibly drive to the
nearby Prairie Smoke Reserve for field studies. Everyone should purchase
the beginner guides on butterflies and dragonflies from the Carden Field
Naturalists at the Carden Recreation Centre for this event so they have
something that they can use in the field and then take away with them for
future reference. This would also prepare them for the trips on Saturday and
Sunday in the field for a more in depth study of dragonflies and

GEOCACHE
CHALLENGE,
LEADER: KRYA HOWES
This activity involves a
high-tech treasure hunt, using a Global Positioning System (GPS), a list of
co-ordinates provided by the Activity Team Leader, and orienteering skills
developed during the session. Each team will search for ‘treasures’
throughout the beautiful Carden Alvar to be collected and brought back to
the Carden Rec Centre. The team which collects the ‘treasures’ in the least
amount of time will be awarded with the first annual Geocashe Challenge Cup
at the Saturday evening dinner. Teams start at times of their choosing and
end at the Carden Recreation Centre. The entire event should take
approximately two hours. GPS directions and instructions will be provided
prior to the challenge. If requested, a quick lesson on using GPS units is
available, upon request. A GPS unit is essential and it may also be helpful
to have a trees guide book with you if you don’t feel comfortable with tree
identification. Minimum 5 teams of one or more and no maximum.

Wildlife Preservation Canada (www.wildlifepreservation.ca)
manages a captive breeding program in Carden to restock the endangered wild
population. Captive Eastern Loggerhead Shrikes are bred in large field
enclosures Participants will be taken to the Carden field propagation
and release site. They will learn about the history of the captive-breeding
project, its evolution, past successes, and what the current season brings.
They will meet the aviculture interns who are primarily responsible for the
day-to-day care of the breeding pairs, see what the shrikes are fed, and
hopefully observe one of the captive pairs in it’s field breeding enclosure
(in small groups, from a distance, depending on pair status). Tour limit is
twenty-five, children are welcome. and minimum is 5. Bring binoculars. There
is poison ivy underfoot so come prepared.

Birds. The grasslands mingled with marshes, along with the beneficial
effects of cattle grazing provide an ample food source. The tour will

young and/or photo box contents may do so.. Most people have never done any
of these things. It can be a lasting experience. Maximum of 20, minimum of 4

so difficult to distinguish. During breeding season, it is their calls that
actually make sparrows so easy. We will make a series of roadside stops by
fields and marshes to identify at least 8 species of sparrows by voice, and
no doubt pick up lots of other grassland and shrubland species as well. By
the end of the morning, you will be able to pick out uncommon sparrows
within seconds, just by hearing them call. Group limited to 10 with a

While their
tiny size creates the illusion of mystery, mosses are recognized using
features similar to those used to identify wildflowers and trees. At the
same time, mosses can do all kinds of tricks that other plants can’t. Take
a second look at the jungle underfoot, using hand-lenses and the naked eye
to become familiar with some of the parts that make up a moss and to
discover what differentiates one moss from its neighbour. Many species are
incredibly consistent in terms of the substrates they inhabit, patterns that
are readily turned to the moss-seeker’s advantage. Learn to recognize some
common species – and be on the look-out for the globally rare alvar denizen,
Cain’s Twisted Moss (Syntrichia cainii). Tour limit of 20 and minimum

a thriving timber industry and hundreds of supporting family farms as well
as local schools and churches. Transport was primarily by rail or horse or
boat. The motor coach tour will visit railway stations, general stores,
blacksmiths, churches Mennonite farmer’s market and bake shop and the famous
Kirkfield Lift Lock. Limit of 23 participants with children over 12 welcome.

“Why am I a
wetland? Let me count the ways.” Wetlands can be deep and very wet with
floating plants, or shallow and dense with lots of cattail. Or they can be
floating mats with bug-eating plants. Or they can look like forests that
are not wetlands at all! We will explore the many faces of wetlands in this
unique portion of Ontario still on the limestone basement of the south, but
within a stone’s throw of the ancient Canadian Shield. We will be wading so
bring rubber boots, insect repellent and if possible an insect net and
insect jar. The tour is limited to 20 and children tall enough to wade into
bulrushes are welcome. Minimum of 5. You will need to bring a lunch and box
lunches will be available at the Carden Recreation Centre.

should be able to photograph Columbine, Bellwort, Hairy Beardtongue and of
course, Prairie Smoke, among many others. Up to ten can be accommodated,

WATERCOLOUR PAINTING: TEXTURES
IN NATURE
LEADER: KELLEY HAMPEL
In this introductory
level workshop, Kelley Hampel will teach some basic watercolour techniques
aimed to get you out painting right away. Class includes an overview of
materials, and hands-on experimenting with techniques to bring textures and
light to your artwork. Students will make numerous queue cards as reminders
of how to get the effects. They will finish one 8” X 10” watercolour
painting. Watercolour paper and paint will be supplied. Watercolour brushes
may be purchased from instructor, or bring your own. Limit 20 Students over

DRAGONFLIES IN THE FIELD,
LEADER:
BOB BOWLES
Carden is wonderful dragonfly
country. This tour is in the field to study insects. We will record the
species and concentrate on identification. Nets may be used to capture some
species but all species will be released alive and unharmed. Tour is limited
to sixteen and children are welcome

WILD ABOUT WETLANDS,
LEADER: DALE LEADBEATER
“Why am I a wetland? Let me
count the ways.” Wetlands can be deep and very wet with floating plants, or
shallow and dense with lots of cattail. Or they can be floating mats with
bug-eating plants. Or they can look like forests that are not wetlands at
all! We will explore the many faces of wetlands in this unique portion of
Ontario still on the limestone basement of the south, but within a stone’s
throw of the ancient Canadian Shield. We will be wading so bring rubber
boots, insect repellent and if possible an insect net and insect jar. The
tour is limited to 20 and children tall enough to wade into bulrushes are
welcome. Minimum of 5. You will need to bring a lunch and box lunches will
be available.

BIRDING BIKE TOUR,
LEADER: BEN PORCHUK
Lead by Couchiching Conservancy’s former Land
Between Coordinator and children’s environmental adventure author, this tour
will focus on birding by bicycling looking at various habitat types,
specific plants, reptiles, amphibians, geology and other natural history
tidbits and theories of the area. Any knowledge or expertise contributed by
participants is welcomed. The tour size is limited to 15 with a minimum of 4

will be ok. Heavy rain and thunderstorms will post-pone the beginning or
cause an early finish. Please all focus on sunny and 25’C conditions for the
day.

SCENIC BUS TOUR,
LEADER DAWN LACKIE
We will depart from the
Carden Recreation Centre and proceed past the Cameron Ranch commemorative
sign to Canal Lake where we can watch Osprey and waterfowl. Next we will
tour Argyle both the newly restored historic General Store and original
blacksmith shop. From Argyle we visit Prospect Marsh (provincially
significant) and historic railway station on route to Kirkfield. In
Kirkfield we will visit the Kirlfield Museum and the 150-year-old
summerhouse of Sir William Mackenzie founder of Canadian National Railway.
Next we will explore the famous Kirkfield Lift Locks a 100-year-old
engineering marvel. From there we will visit the unique Museum of Disposable
Art. Finally we will stop to inspect the Important Bird Area Information
Sign before we return to the Carden Recreation Centre. Maximum of 23 minimum

GEOLOGY OF THE CARDEN PLAIN:
LEADER: BRIAN MOULD
500.000,000 years ago Carden was on the equator
and under a shallow sea. The coral reef just off shore laid down the
limestone plain of today together with fossils of animals from that period.
Much later Carden migrated north and was again submerged, this time under a
glacial lake that left behind beaches and esters. The tours will visit
representative sites of all theses features. Maximum 20 minimum 5 children
are included.

LICHENS AND MOSSES,
LEADER: ELLEN LARSEN
We will explore the
amazing diversity of lichens and mosses in a selected area, searching on
trees, rocks and soil. Some species are large and can be seen with the
unaided eye, some are better appreciated with 5X to 10X magnifying glasses.
You will probably never look at rocks and tree bark the same after seeing
all of the beautiful structures and colours. awaiting a few moments of
searching. Children are welcome and helpful being closer to the ground they
often see things adults miss in this veritable treasure hunt. Maximum 12,

PAINTING FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION,

Do you have
some great artistic ideas but don’t know how to take it beyond the idea
stage? Maybe you can’t figure out how to plan your project from concept to
completion? Kelley Hampel will present an interactive demonstration of her
process, including a video presentation. She will be available to discuss
and advise you on your projects. Maximum 30 minimum 5 and children are
welcome.

Help people understand
nature photography and help them to understand their camera and digital
equipment. Questions are a good way to help people understand. Hopefully we
can get out and do some nature photography. Maximum 15 minimum 5.

LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
BREEDING,
LEADER: RINA NICHOLS
Wildlife Preservation Canada (www.wildlifepreservation.ca)
manages a captive breeding program in Carden to restock the endangered wild
population. Captive Eastern Loggerhead Shrikes are bred in large field
enclosures Participants will be taken to the Carden field propagation
and release site. They will learn about the history of captive-breeding
project, its evolution, past successes, and what the current season brings.
They will meet the aviculture interns who are primarily responsible for the
day-to-day care of the breeding pairs, see what the shrikes are fed, and
hopefully observe one of the captive pairs in it’s field breeding enclosure
(in small groups, from a distance, depending on pair status). Tour limit is
twenty-five and children are welcome. and minimum is 5. Bring binoculars.
There is poison ivy underfoot so come prepared.

GARDENING FOR
BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES
LEADERS: CAROL BRYANS & CAREN OLDFIELD,
Participants will learn about: the basics of organic gardening and why these
practices are so important to flora and fauna; types of plants that
encourage birds & butterflies; how to propagate them in a pesticide free
environment as well as “tricks of the trade” that help you manage the work
of gardening, like working composters, that make it easier and more
enjoyable. Learn about good bugs versus bad bugs and how to tell the
difference. Handouts will be available. Tour limited to 20 including
children over 5, minimum 4.

ALVAR FLOWERS,
LEADER: KYRA HOWES
We will
have a 2hr walking tour of the new Prairie Smoke Nature Reserve. It will be
an opportunity to see different types of alvar (grassland, shrubland and
pavement), view specialty alvar flowers (“alvarophiles”), learn about plant
adaptations to this harsh environment, enjoy & appreciate the unique
qualities of alvars. Although the main focus of the tour will be plants, we
would be remiss if we didn’t stop to admire the many butterfly species that
are found there as well as birds such as Eastern Towhees & Brown Thrashers
that we will hear calling to us.
Alvar
plants we will see include Indian paintbrush, Prairie Smoke, Seneca
Snakeroot, Shrubby Cinquefoil, Fragrant Sumac, Balsam Ragwort, False
Pennyroyal etc. The tour is limited to 15 persons minimum 5 including
children over 10 years. Bring binoculars and a flower book.

FOSSIL HUNT,
LEADER:

Carden is a
limestone plain formed 500 million years ago from the coral reef of a
tropical sea. The limestone contains many fossils from that period. The tour
will roam around limestone outcroppings to look for and identify fossils. Up
to 20 participants are allowed and children are welcome. Minimum 5.

Participants will begin
with a tour of the Sir William Mackenzie Inn, which has been profiled in
“Haunted Ontario” and been featured on “Creepy Canada” and “Rescue Mediums.”
Strange coincidences and stories of the paranormal will highlight a short
walk on the Inn grounds and in the village of Kirkfield. The tour ends at
the local History Museum and participants will have a chance to explore and
purchase souvenir items there. Up to 25 participants can be accommodated.
Minimum 1. Children are welcome.
