For the first time, I am beginning to
wonder if I really like this job of editor of your Newsletter. I have
always gotten a real kick out of gathering materials, hustling and
cajoling articles from those who have had some really neat experiences
etc. But, I am not so sure anymore! You see, it seems to me that I
just put the last issue “to bed” and here I am on my perch doing yet
another. That in and of itself is not the problem; the problem is that
another three months have passed so quickly. Life is roaring past! It
only seems a few months ago that I struggled to design and compile our
first issue, and that was nearly four years ago!
So here we are, nearing the end of
another year. Few leaves remain on the trees…the wind is howling, and
all the raking I did yesterday, seems for naught!
But it has been an eventful summer. At
our last meeting, Herb Furniss reported a very successful year
with his Bluebird trail, and in this issue, Jessica Steiner, the
project Biologist, provides a report of the Carden Eastern Loggerhead
Shrike Recovery data for 2006.
Along with Larry and Darlene Kirtley,
Bonnie and I had the privilege of traveling to Stratford in early
October to present: The Wildlife Photography of Larry Kirtley
and The Carden Alvar…and its Birds to the Stratford
Field Naturalists. While there I picked up a recent insert in the
Stratford Beacon Herald, celebrating the 40th
anniversary of the Stratford Field Naturalists. One of the articles
really touched me and Don Farwell, the author of On
Becoming a naturalist: A close-up view of the natural world. has
graciously permitted us to include it in this issue of The Praire
Smoke.
As always, I am grateful to those who
have contributed to this issue, I trust you will enjoy it!
David.
