Hiking boots and binoculars are recommended. Children of any age welcome. Maximum 20 individuals, minimum 10. SPARROWS BY VOICE, LEADER: RON REID Carden is famous for its LBJ's - those sparrows and other "little brown jobs" that are so difficult to distinguish. During breeding season, it is their calls that actually make sparrows so easy. We will make a series of roadside stops by fields and marshes on our way to Windmill Ranch to identify at least 8 species of sparrows by voice, and no doubt pick up lots of other grassland and shrubland species as well. By the end of the morning, you will be able to pick out uncommon sparrows within seconds, just by hearing them call. Bring binoculars and a bird book. Maximum 10 participants, minimum 4. FESTIVAL BIKE TOUR, LEADER: ANN KENNETT This tour will let you experience the bumpy back roads of Carden by bicycle, while also pausing to look at various birds, plants, reptiles, and other natural history tidbits we find. Any knowledge or expertise contributed by participants is welcomed. Maximum 15 individuals, minimum 4. (***Weather Considerations: Drizzle or light rain will be ok. Heavy rain and thunderstorms will postpone the tour or cause an early finish. Please, all focus on sunny and 25˚C conditions for the day.) An introduction to birds found in three local habitats: woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands. Carpooling from the Rec. Centre, we will visit each habit type to look and listen for birds. Tips will be exchanged on what to look for and how to know what you're seeing; field guides will be used to confirm identification. With luck, swallows, warblers, woodpeckers, herons, bluebirds, bobolinks, blackbirds, sparrows, ospreys and numerous others might be observed. Binoculars and field guides will be available, but if you have your own, please bring them. Children over 10 welcome. Maximum 12 participants, minimum 1. ALVAR FLOWERS, LEADER: DALE LEADBEATER We will have a three-hour walking tour of the new Little Blue Stem Alvar. It will be an opportunity to see different types of alvar (grassland, shrubland and pavement), view specialty alvar flowers ("alvarophiles"), learn about plant adaptations to this harsh environment, and enjoy the unique qualities of alvars. Although the main focus of the tour will be plants, we would be remiss if we didn't stop to admire the many butterfly and bird species found there. Alvar plants we will see include Indian paintbrush, prairie smoke, Seneca snakeroot, shrubby cinquefoil, fragrant sumac, balsam ragwort, false pennyroyal and not surprisingly lots of little blue stem along with other alvar grasses. Bring binoculars and a flower book. Children over 10 years welcome. Maximum 15 persons, minimum 3. REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS, LEADER: JEFF HATHAWAY Participants will be taken on a guided hike in search of some of the fascinating reptiles and amphibians that inhabit the Carden Plain. Many of these animals are quite secretive in nature, but with any luck at least a few species will be found. Various conservation issues will be discussed along the way! Maximum 20 participants, minimum 5 BUTTERFLIES AND DRAGONFLIES FOR BEGINNERS, LEADER: BOB BOWLES To begin, there will be an inside workshop to go through the classification of the different species and keys using field guides. To follow, the group will walk through the field behind the Carden Recreational Centre looking for butterflies and across the road by the edge of the lake to look for dragonflies. Participants can apply what they learned in the workshop. We may walk further down the road and possibly drive to the nearby Prairie Smoke Property for further field studies if time permits. It is recommended that participants purchase the beginner guides on butterflies and dragonflies from the Carden Field Naturalists at the Rec. Centre so they can refer to them during this event and in the future. This event prepares participants for subsequent, and more in depth, field tours for butterflies and dragonflies on Saturday and Sunday. Maximum 20 individuals, minimum 5. DUFFERIN QUARRY TOUR, LEADER: ANDREA BOURRIE Join staff from Dufferin Aggregates for an overview of the geology of the Carden Plain and learn about how the aggregate industry contributes to our strong and growing community. We'll debunk some myths about operations and give you a tour of our award-winning quarry. You'll have a chance to ask questions and get straight answers. The tour is conducted by bus directly into the pit. Children welcome, but if under 16, require adult supervision. Maximum 40 individuals, minimum 10. FORESTRY, LEADER: ELEANOR REED Take a pleasant walk through Prairie Smoke Property, tune up your senses, and learn to identify some common trees. We will discuss tree life cycles and learn how these relate to forest management. We will also look for wildlife habitat features provided by trees. BIRD DETECTIVE, SPEAKER: BRIDGET STUTCHBURY
Bridget Stutchbury, a professor of biology at York University, roams forests and jungles studying the sexual antics and social lives of birds, and explains the science behind their surprisingly sophisticated and often amusing behaviour. In her new book The Bird Detective, Stutchbury, a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Silence of the Songbirds, explains why some birds readily divorce their partners, why parents don't treat their sons and daughters equally, why females sneak copulations with neighbouring males, why mothers sometimes desert their babies, and why some adults forego breeding altogether. On a more serious note, she writes about how, and if, bird behaviour can help species adapt to the drastic changes humans are making to the environment. No limit to attendance.
F4) 9:00PM - MIDNIGHT
MOTHS BY UV LIGHT, LEADER: DAVE BEADLE
Employing a couple of mercury vapour bulbs in front of white sheets, we will discuss and identify the moths as they are attracted. If possible, I may catch some moths the night before so we have some to look at before it gets dark. I will also paint an attractive (to the moths!) sugar solution on nearby trees in the hope of attracting some of the colourful under wing moths. In 2008 we attracted 215 different species including the spectacular luna moth. Held at a location 20 minutes away from the Rec. Centre by car pool. Children over 10 years welcome. Maximum 20 participants, minimum 5.
F5) 10:00PM - MIDNIGHT

SUNDAY MORNING:
G1) 6:00AM - 9:00AM - $15:00 fee (for bus)
CAMERON RANCH TOUR, LEADERS: PAT AND JIM WOODFORD
A tour of the interior of Cameron Ranch Alvar, Canada's own Serengeti, to learn about the grassland and shrubland alvar communities there, and to see specialized alvar plants such as fragrant sumac, balsam ragwort, hairy beardtongue, and false pennyroyal. It is also common to see or hear a diversity of birds such as upland sandpiper, horned lark, eastern towhee, clay-coloured sparrow, and grasshopper sparrow. With luck, an eastern loggerhead shrike may be observed. Transportation to the interior of the Ranch will be by school bus, with walking required after that. Hiking boots and binoculars are recommended. Children of any age are welcome. Maximum 20 individuals, minimum 10.
G2) 6:30AM - 9:30AM
GRASSLAND BIRD TOUR, LEADER: LESLIE DYMENT
We will stop at several locations on Carden Plain's grasslands, and walk slowly looking for birds in their breeding habitat. Both sight and sound will be used for identification. Rare species such as eastern loggerhead shrike and Henslow's sparrow are possibilities. Maximum 20 participants, minimum 5.
G3) 7:00AM - 9:30AM
SPARROWS BY VOICE, LEADER: RON REID
Carden is famous for its LBJ's - those sparrows and other "little brown jobs" that are so difficult to distinguish. During breeding season, it is their calls that actually make sparrows so easy. We will make a series of stops by fields on Little Blue Stem Alvar to identify at least 8 species of sparrows by voice, and no doubt pick up lots of other grassland and shrubland species as well. By the end of the morning, you will be able to pick out uncommon sparrows within seconds, just by hearing them call. Bring binoculars and a bird book. Maximum 10 participants, minimum 4.
G4) 7:30AM - 10:30AM
BIRDING BY EAR, LEADERS: DON AND BARB CAVIN
The event will be a tour of grassland and juniper meadow habitats along Juniper Trail and Wylie Road in the heart of the Carden Alvar. The walking tour will focus on the identification of grassland species such as eastern loggerhead shrike, brown thrasher, upland sandpiper and those confusing sparrows and juniper specialties such as clay-coloured sparrows. Bring binoculars and your ears. Children are welcome. Maximum 15 individuals, minimum 5.
G5) 8:00AM - 11:00AM
CALLING IN BIRDS, LEADER: ERNIE JARDINE
Some birds are very hard to see: yellow rails and Virginia rails for example. When we play a prerecording of their song, they will often come out of hiding to check out this potential "intruder." Come with us to Prospect Marsh Nature Reserve where rails can be heard but not often seen and give this technique a try. Maximum 16 participants, minimum 5.
G6) 8:00AM - 11:00AM
PADDLE CANAL LAKE, LEADER: BRETT MOORE
Paddling the marshy and granite island areas as well as the river leaving the lake, we will explore for birds and other wildlife. Expect herons, bitterns, breeding ducks, osprey, grebes, beavers, muskrats, otters, turtles, and more. Bring your own vessel and equipment. Maximum 6 vessels, minimum 1.

LICHENS, LEADER: CHRIS LEWIS
We will explore the amazing diversity of lichens in a selected area, searching on trees, rocks and soil. Participants will be taken to the Carden field propagation and release site. They will learn about the history of the captive-breeding project, its evolution, past successes, and what the current season brings. They will meet the aviculture interns who are primarily responsible for the day-to-day care of the breeding pairs, see what the shrikes are fed, and hopefully observe one of the captive pairs in it's field breeding enclosure (in small groups, from a distance, depending on pair status).
