Cameron Ranch Index The Cameron Ranch was purchased from the Crown in1873 by William Cameron who recognized that the land on the Carden Plain might be good range land. He was the first to introduce ranching in Carden. The Cameron Ranch has never been ploughed, and although there may have been some limited logging operations in the past, most of the 3000 acre ranch is much like it was hundreds of years ago. (The effects of cattle ranching excepted) The Nature Conservancy of Canada completed the purchase of the 3000 acre ranch in the spring of 2003 - after two years of local and international fundraising. Locally, the Couchiching Conservancy raised more than $200,000.00. Currently the development of a management plan is in progress - the intention is that the rare and very sensitive natural alvar habitat and the species it supports will be preserved forever. Windmill Ranch In 2006 The NCC, with local support from the Couchiching Conservancy and others purchased the 1600 acre Windmill Ranch , a property adjoining the Cameron Ranch.
